ISSUE 5 DISRUPTIONS WINTER 2019
We better get used to it. 2019 will be a year of disruptions in many areas and regions. With or without agreement the United Kingdom and the European Union are bound to part ways. In our section on Geopolitics we explore the genealogy of Brexit by examining the late Victorian debate about the adaptation of the British Empire to a changing international landscape not very different from our own. Our section on Science and Innovation deals with the disruptions brought about by the new on-demand ride sharing platforms in the labour market, particularly in emerging economies like Russia and China. In our Interview corner we meet Dr. Hauke Ritz, a leading German expert on Eurasian affairs, who will explain how he sees the growing divide between the West and Russia while in Politics & Society we analyse the impact of the rise of Asia on the exercise of a cosmopolitan leadership.
In the realm of humanities, our Enlightenment section explores the interlinked disruptions created by the irruption of crowds in history and the emergence of conscience from the realm of matter. In the same section we also welcome the return of philosophy as an intermediary between Techné and Logos, between the technological and spiritual realms. In our favourite Readings´ section we examine the role of silence as a way to assert our freedom in a world dominated by noise. Finally, in Arts &Trends we will reexamine the role of the Group of Eight in the history of Spanish and Iberian art as Spanish and Portuguese musicians, writers and painters contributed to the avant-garde in the early XX century.
